Cops-lawyers conflict: Police personnel in Delhi end 11-hour protest

Delhi Police sanctioned Rs 25,000 to all cops injured in Tis Hazari clash.

After a meeting in the evening, Mr Baijal directed the Chief Secretary to ensure that best possible medical treatment is provided to the injured advocates as per the court order.

He also directed the Commissioner of Police to ensure that the police officers injured are also provided best medical treatment free of cost and advised that senior officers should visit the injured policemen to boost their morale and comfort their families.

Further, suitable ex-gratia compensation be given to the injured officers of Delhi Police as well.

The LG also appealed to all concerned to maintain harmony and law and order. He also advised the senior officers to assure the police personnel that no injustice shall be allowed to be done to any member of the force.

The protesting police personnel had given a list of 10 demands that included the creation of a Police Protection Act, sources said.

Thousands of Delhi Police personnel on Tuesday blocked one of the busiest roads in the national Capital passing by old PHQ at the ITO, protesting over the clashes with lawyers at the Tis Hazari courts.

Protesting outside the police headquarters, the men in uniform held placards and banners stating ' Save the Savers', Save the Saviours, 'Protectors need protection' besides others and asked the Commissioner of Police Amulya Patnaik to come forward and address their concerns.

Mr Patnaik met the agitating policemen and urged them to maintain discipline. He added that the situation is being handled and the report on Saturday's violence has been submitted to the Union Home Ministry.

Mr Baijal's remarks followed a protest by thousands of Delhi Police personnel at ITO over the clashes with lawyers at the Tis Hazari courts on Saturday over a parking issue that escalated into a major showdown.

The LG was briefed about the situation by Special CP (Intelligence) and the orders of Delhi High Court in the matter.

The LG observed that advocates and police, important pillars of the criminal justice system, should work in complete harmony. In the wake of the recent unfortunate incident, it is imperative to restore the trust between the two and also to ensure that justice is done impartially in the entire matter.

Delhi Government termed the police-lawyers standoff in the national Capital extremely ''unfortunate.''

''Entire situation is very unfortunate. On one side, there are police personnel who provide security to people and on other side, there are the lawyers who provide justice to them. Conflict between both police and lawyers, should have been avoided or handled well,'' Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia told a news conference here.
