Congress blasts PM Modi for dragging Indira in demonetisation debate

| | Dec 17, 2016, at 12:51 am
New Delhi, Dec 16 (IBNS) The Congress on Friday flayed Prime Minister Narendra Modi who in a scathing counter attack accused the Opposition of being against the war on corruption and black money, alleging that the previous Congress govts led by both Indira Gandhi and later Manmohan Singh had shirked the responsibility even though recommendations were made for demonetisation.

In a press conference, Congress senior leader Kapil Sibal said: "Trouble is Modi ji doesn't know history nor is he interested in knowing it. Modi ji should remember what his ideological masters did in 1947," countering the PM's argument that for him the country is first and then the party.

Sibal said Modi's ideological patrons were on the same side as the British. "They opposed Congress' Freedom Struggle. For them, organisation was first, nation second," said Sibal.

"For us nation is always first. Today, Modi ji has forsaken both nation and party. He is busy trying to show his own image on TV," the Congress tweeted quoting Sibal.

"Modi ji mentioned the Wanchoo Report of 1971. He said, YB Chavan told Indira ji that there should be demonetisation. I don't know how far & to what extent the new policy will be able to affect the person for whom it is intended. One thing is clear...a large no. of people belonging to the middle & lower middle classes will be hit hard on account of the demonetisation of the currency."

He said  Modi ji is trying to call even Dr Rajendra Prasad a scamster and anti-national because Prasad had once said ".....to penalize honest Indians who in good faith have their savings in notes of demonetised value."

Meanwhile, the Office of Rahul Gandhi has tweeted that the Congress vice-president is leading a "Jan Jagruti Padyatra" from the Holy Spirit Church to Fatorda Ground, Margaon in Goa to raise the people's voice against demonetisation.
