Cong uproar stalls Sachin Tendulkar's attempt to deliver maiden speech in RS
New Delhi, Dec 21 (IBNS) : Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar's attempt to make his maiden speech in the Rajya Sabha came a cropper on Thursday as a ruckus created by Congress members forced adjournment for the day, reports said.
The Congress members were continuing with their protest against Prime Minister Narendra Modi's comment against his predecessor Manmohan Singh and the uproar denied the master blaster to deliver his speech on the right to play and the future of sports in India.
According to reports, for the first few minutes Sachin just stood there smiling as the Congress raised a massive ruckus for the fourth consecutive day, demanding that Modi apologise for his comments about Pakistan and Manmohan Singh.
At this point, Vice President Venkiah Naidu tried to intervene :
"You don't want to respect a person with a legendary record in India, you do not respect sports..."
As the uproar reached a crescendo, the House had to be adjourned twice before 2 pm.
But when the House reassembled after 2 pm Leader of the Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad sought an explanation from the Government on the propaganda against the previous Congress Government on the 2G allocation scam leading to a fresh uproar and adjournment.
Tendulkar has been a member of Rajya Sabha for five years, and this was his first attempt at initiating a debate.
The Congress has been on an aggressive stance since Monday, raising the issue of the Prime Minister making a conspiracy with Pakistan" remark against Manmohan Singh, who participated in a dinner hosted by Congress veteran Manishankar Aiyar inviting few Pakistani dignitaries.
The event was held shortly before the Gujarat polls and Modi made his comment while addressing an election rally.
The issue raised a storm also in the Lok Sabha, which witnessed two adjournments in the pre-lunch sitting.
