New Delhi, June 12 (IBNS): Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said his party respects the political opponents and that is why he was the first to visit ailing Atal Bihari Vajpayee at AIIMS after the former prime minister was admitted for kidney infection.

"The Congress party was the one who fought against Vajpayeeji but when he fail sick, I was the first to visit him at hospital," Gandhi said while addressing an event in Mumbai.

"This is the ideology of Congress party, we respect our opponents. Vajpayeeji worked for the country," the Congress president added.

Gandhi has visited the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Monday to meet former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Vajpayee was admitted to AIIMS on Monday morning on the advice of doctors, a statement issued by his office said.

"AS per the advice of doctors, former PM Atal Bihar Vajpayee has been admitted in AIIMS today for routine check-up and investigations. He will be under the supervision of Dr Randeep Guleria, Director, AIIMS, there,” the statement read.

On Tuesday, doctors treating Vajpayee stated that he will continue to be in hospital till the infection is controlled.

Vajpayee, 93, was the first head of government from outside the Congress party to serve a full five-year term, as a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Vajpayee was elected to Lok Sabha from Lucknow in 1991, 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2004.
