CBI quizzes Abhishek Banerjee's sister-in-law in coal scam case

Kolkata/IBNS: A day after serving notice to the wife of TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday interrogated his sister-in-law in connection with its ongoing probe into an illegal coal mining case, sources said.

Menoka Gambhir, the sister of Abhishek Banerjee's wife Rujira Naroola Banerjee, is currently being quizzed by the CBI sleuths at her Kolkata residence.

Earlier on Sunday, a CBI team visited the residence of West Bengal Chief Minister's nephew in south Kolkata's Kalighat area and served a notice to his wife under CrPC section 160 (attendance of witness) where she had been asked to appear before the investigating officers as a witness for interrogation.

Responding to the notice, Rujira Banerjee on Monday informed the Central probe agency that she will be available for the interrogation on Tuesday (Feb 23) between 11 am. and 3 pm.

"Though I am unaware of the reason for me being called for questioning or the subject matter of the investigation, you may visit my residence, as per your convenience between 11 am. and 3 pm. tomorrow (Feb 23)," Rujira Banerjee wrote to the CBI.

Sources in the CBI said that a team of sleuths will visit the premise again after 11 am. on Tuesday to quiz Rujira Banerjee.

Meanwhile, hitting out at the BJP-ruled Central government over the CBI action, Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee tweeted, "We have full faith in the law of the land. However, if they think they can use these ploys to intimidate us, they are mistaken. We are not the ones who would ever be cowed down."
