CAA protest: Curfew continues in Mangaluru, no untoward incident reported
Mangaluru/UNI: Normal life was disrupted in the violence-hit coastal city as the curfew in the limits of five police stations has been extended across the city till Sunday night. However, no untoward incident was reported on Friday.
Life was completely affected in the city under curfew on Friday, with shops and establishments and eateries remaining closed even as hundreds of passengers arriving by bus and train struggled to reach their destinations.
None of the government and private offices functioned following strict imposition of curfew, while a holiday was declared for educational institutions across the district. People had a hard time due to non-availability of daily essentials such as milk, curd, vegetables, meat and fish and other items.
While streets in the central business district, which witnessed violence on Thursday, wore completely deserted look as the police did not allow even a single person to venture out, areas outside saw the presence of some life with private vehicles moving about. Buses, taxis and auto-rickshaws were off the roads.
The city by and large remained peaceful with no untoward incident being reported since Friday.
As a precautionary measure, the police had strengthened security in the sensitive areas in Mangaluru police commissionerate jurisdiction. The arterial roads teeming with vehicles wore a deserted look for most part of the day.
Mangaluru Commissioner of Police Dr P S Harsha said the curfew was relaxed for two hours between 12hrs and 2 pm, following requests from a community to offer prayers.
Police Commissioner asserted that the administration will assess the situation and will think about relaxing curfew. He also added that the situation in the city was completely under control.
“The decision to relax curfew in order to help public buy essentials on Saturday will be taken after a review of the situation," Dr Harsha said.
