CAA is unnecessary but it is India's internal matter: Sheikh Hasina
Dhaka/IBNS: Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina has questioned the need of the Indian government to pass the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) last month.
The CAA will grant citizenship to Hindu, Sikh, Christian, Buddhist, Parsi, Jain but not Muslim refugees who came to India from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan before 2015.
“We don’t understand why [the Indian government] did it. It was not necessary,” Hasina told Gulf News.
Stating that there is no case of reverse migration from India, Hasina said: "No, there is no reverse migration from India. But within India, people are facing many problems."
However, Hasina maintained that the CAA and NRC are internal matters of India.
“Bangladesh has always maintained that the CAA and NRC are internal matters of India. The Government of India, on their part, has also repeatedly maintained that the NRC is an internal exercise of India and Prime Minister Modi has in person assured me of the same during my visit to New Delhi in October 2019,” Hasina, who is the leader of the Muslim majority nation, said.
According to Sheikh Hasina, the relationship between Bangladesh and India is currently at its best, with cooperation in a “wide spectrum of areas”.
Triggering protests across the country, the Indian government passed the CAA last year.
The Union Home Minister this month issued a notification of the CAA effective from Jan 10.
