BSP chief Mayawati urges SC to direct Centre to bring in strict law for crimes against women
Lucknow/UNI: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president Mayawati on Saturday requested the Supreme Court to direct the Union government to make stringent law for curbing crimes against women.
Following the Unnao rape victim's death at a hospital situated in New Delhi on late Friday night, after she was set ablaze by five accused, Ms Mayawati told mediapersons in the state capital that the Union government does not look very serious as far as tackling crimes against women are concerned.
'In such a situation, I appeal to the Supreme Court that it takes cognisance of the matter and direct the Centre to make a stringent law,' she added.
According to the BSP chief, she wanted to meet Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel over the Unnao matter, but because of some other programme, the meeting could not happen. Since Ms Patel is also a woman, she would understand the matter, Ms Mayawati added.
She said that she wanted her points to be now conveyed through the media, adding that the Governor has other Constitutional rights, which she can exercise if she wants.
The BSP supremo said that although crimes against women were happening everywhere in the country, UP had crossed all the limits.
Something or the other is happening everyday and the reason is that the state government is unable to take action against criminals, she alleged.
