BJP leader Ram Madhav to attend youth convention in Srinagar
Srinagar, Oct 20 (UNI) A one-day Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) youth convention was being held on Sunday in the summer capital, Srinagar, three days before Block Development Commission (BDC) elections in J&K on October 24.
The convention was being held for the first time after revocation of Article 370 and 35 A, besides dividing the state into two Union Territories on August 5.
BJP National General secretary and J&K in-charge Ram Madhav is also attending the convention which is being held at a time when leaders of all mainstream political parties, including three former Chief Ministers Dr Farooq Abdullah, his son Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti are under detention.
Senior BJP state leader Altaf Thakur said there are 400 seating arrangements for the participants. He said, 'We expect over 600 youths to take part in the convention, and discuss various issues pertaining to youth.'
He said more and more youth are coming forward since they are now aware that it is the BJP which can provide youth employment, development and safety and security.
He said Article 370 and 35 A were the main hurdles in the development of the state. 'Now these articles have been removed, entire Jammu and Kashmir will march towards prosperity and development,' he said.
About the boycott of BDC elections by other political parties, he said, these parties have nothing to offer to people.
However, barring BJP, all national, regional and local political parties have boycotted the BDC polls alleging that the elections are being held at a time when senior politicians are in jails or under house arrest.
Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Conference chief Shafiq Mir questioned the decision of holding BDC polls on party lines, saying the panchs and sarpanches were elected on non-party basis in the state. He said this was being done to favour a single party in the state, where other political parties are not participating in the process.
'We have time and again said that panches and sarpanches are non political who have been elected on non party basis to serve the people at grassroots level,' he said.
He said not a single paisa has been spent from the funds allocated by the centre for panchayats in the valley. Because of no internet, panchayats could not do any development work, he said.
