BJP claims Ram Navami procession attacked in Kolkata's Park Circus area, Kolkata Police deny

| @indiablooms | Apr 07, 2025, at 12:20 am

The Bharatiya Janata Party claimed that a Ram Navami procession was attacked, and their vehicles were vandalised in the Park Circus area in Kolkata on Sunday.

Union Minister and BJP leader Sukanta Majumdar posted on X: "As the Ram Navami procession returned, Hindu devotees were savagely attacked in Kolkata’s Park Circus Seven Point area. Stones rained down on vehicles just for carrying saffron flags. Windshields shattered. Chaos unleashed. This wasn’t random—it was targeted violence. And where was the police? Right there. Watching. Silent. Spineless."

Targeting West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress Chief Mamata Banerjee over the incident, he wrote: "The very force handpicked by @MamataOfficial —completely paralyzed by her politics of appeasement. Not one step taken to protect innocent Hindus."

Meanwhile, the Kolkata Police said no permission was given to host such a procession in the area.

The police clarified that no such procession occurred in the area.

"With reference to an alleged incident at Park Circus, it is clarified that no permission was taken for any procession, nor did any such movement occur in the area. Upon receiving information about damage to a vehicle, police intervened promptly to restore order. A case is being registered to investigate the matter. Public is advised not to heed any rumours," police wrote on X.

Ram Nabami Rallies

Senior BJP leaders from West Bengal took part in different Ram Navami processions across the state on Sunday.

BJP Bengal state President Sukanta Majumdar led a Ram Navami rally in Howrah, which received permission from the Calcutta High Court.

Earlier in a video message, he said: "A few million Hindus are expected to hit the road on Ram Navami. I would urge the state government to take steps so that it can be celebrated peacefully. Any attempts to forcefully halt the celebrations won’t be tolerated. Ram Navami celebrations will be held no matter what you do.”

"People are on the roads to take part in the procession as we are celebrating Ram Navami. Ram is all over the country and in West Bengal. We don't need anyone's permission; only West Bengal is a place where we need permission to celebrate our religious festival. Police don't give permission; we always get permission from the court. The police are working here as the cadre and not the police," she said.
