Bihar govt considering to increase number of jails
“We feel the strong need for increasing the number of jail in Bihar given the growing number of prisoners. The present capacity of jails is far short of adequately housing the prisoners,” excise minister Abdul Jalil Mastan told the media on Monday.
The pressures on Bihar jails are increasing especially after the state government imposed total alcohol ban in April last year. The new excise law provides for stringent punishment to those caught with alcohol bottles or involved in liquor trade.
Around 20,000 people have been arrested and sent to jail for possessing liquor or getting involved in illegal liquor trade since the government enforced the liquor ban last year.
Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar in a new development has announced to dismiss officials caught involved in liquor trade.
