Bengal BJP worker's mother allegedly beaten up by TMC men in Nimta dies

Kolkata/IBNS: Elderly mother of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker, who was allegedly beaten up by Trinamool Congress (TMC) men at her residence in Nimta area of North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal last month, died on Monday morning, reports said.

According to reports, Nimta's BJP activist Gopal Majumder and his 85-year-old mother, Shova Majumder, were allegedly assaulted by at least three local TMC activists and their house were also attacked on Feb 26 night, shortly after the schedule of Bengal assembly election was declared.

Following the incident, the elderly woman had fallen sick and was undergoing treatment in a city hospital.

The 85-year-old was taken home back days ago and she breathed her last on Monday morning.

Reacting on the matter, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who is steering the BJP's poll campaign in Bengal, tweeted: "Anguished over the demise of Bengal’s daughter Shova Majumdar ji, who was brutally beaten by TMC goons."

"The pain & wounds of her family will haunt Mamata didi for long. Bengal will fight for a violence-free tomorrow, Bengal will fight for a safer state for our sisters & mothers," Shah added.

BJP's national president J.P. Nadda also took the matter to Twitter.

Meanwhile, TMC Lok Sabha MP Sougata Roy absolved his party over the death of Shova Majumder.

"The 85-year-old woman who was suffering from various ailments passed away today, and I am very sorry about her death but it had nothing to with the altercation between her son and the TMC worker," Sougata Roy said.

During a rally in Nandigram, TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee said, "I don't know how the sister has died. We don't support violence against women."

Countering HM Amit Shah's tweet on the incident, Banerjee said, "Amit Shah tweets and says, 'Bengal ka kya haal hai.' What is the condition in UP? What is the condition in Hathras?"

TMC spokesperson and Rajya Sabha MP Derek O'Brien tweeted: "The death of Shova Majumdar is a tragedy. What is totally unfortunate though is the Home Min peddling a narrative when the incident is under investigation. He heads a Police Force & multiple Central Agencies. Shouldn’t he show some respect to the investigative process of India!"
