Beginning of the end starts: Mamata Banerjee on BJP's defeat in UP by-polls
Kolkata, Mar 14 (IBNS): Reacting to the stunning performance of the Samajwadi Party (SP) in Uttar Pradesh by-polls, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has said the beginning of the end has started hinting at a possible downfall of the BJP in 2019 General Election.
Banerjee made the comment while congratulating Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati, who hurt the BJP in Uttar Pradesh by-poll by forming an alliance.
One of the strong proponents of a unified Opposition, Banerjee, tweeted, "Congratulating the chiefs of SP and BSP, Banerjee tweeted, "Great victory. Congratulations to Mayawati Ji and @yadavakhilesh Ji for #UPByPolls The beginning of the end has started."

As the counting process is heading towards the end, the Samajwadi Party (SP) is on the verge of winning both Gorakhpur and Phulpur parliamentary constituencies, which were considered to be the bastions of UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya.
In Gorakhpur seat, the SP got 2,78,611 votes as opposed to BJP's 2,50,249 votes.
In Phulpur constituency, the SP secured 1,67,008 votes while the BJP got 1,44,166 votes.
While the Gorakhpur seat was vacated by Adityanath after assuming the CM's office in 2017, the Phulpur seat fell vacant after Maurya resigned from his MP post to become the deputy CM of the state in the same year.
In 2017 state election, the BJP and its allies had a landslide victory by bagging 325 seats in 403-member Assembly.
