Assam flood affects nearly 24.60 lakh people, death toll mounts to 88
Guwahati/IBNS: The Assam flood situation is still grim as nearly 24.60 lakh people of 25 districts are affected.
One person drowned in the floodwaters on Wednesday taking the state death toll to 88.
The flood report of Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) stated that nearly 24.60 lakh people of 25 districts – Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Sonitpur, Darrang, Baksa, Nalbari, Barpeta, Chirang, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, South Salmara, Goalpara, Kamrup, Kamrup (Metro), Morigaon, Nagaon, Golaghat, Jorhat, Majuli, Sivasagar, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, West Karbi Anglong-are affected in the current spate of the flood.
Goalpara is the worst-hit district with over 4.58 lakh people being affected in the deluge followed by 3.52 lakh people in Barpeta district, 3.14 lakh people in Morigaon district, 2.77 lakh people in Dhubri district, 1.80 lakh people in South Salmara district.
2409 villages under 70 revenue circles are currently underwater.
The floodwaters have submerged 1.09 lakh hectares of croplands in the flood-hit districts.
Nearly 45,000 people are currently taking shelter at 276 relief camps.
The water level of Brahmaputra river is still flowing above danger level mark at Dibrugarh, Neamatighat in Jorhat district, Tezpur in Sonitpur district, Goalpara and Dhubri district.
On the other hand, the floodwaters inundated 90 percent areas of Kaziranga National Park.
According to the park authority, 120 wild animals including 12 rhinos died in flood in the national park.
