Anti-CAB stir affects life in Manipur

Imphal/ UNI:  Life was completely affected here in Manipur today as Manipur People Against Citizenship Bill (MANPAC) imposed an 18-hour strike against the proposed Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB).

All business establishments and educational institutes were closed down even though the government threatened to cancel licences of all shops that were closed down today. All inter and intrastate passenger services were cancelled.

Oil depots were also closed down. Attendance in government offices was thin even though the Chief Secretary Suresh Babu issued an order asking all employees to attend office.

Strike supporters came out and blocked roads. Only emergency services were allowed to travel on the roads. Security personnel were assigned duties at important locations to check the occurrence of any untoward incident.

The statewide strike was from midnight to 1800 hours. Students, women had been staging sit-in protest at various places. Congress party is also continuing hunger strike opposing CAB and protection of Manipur’s integrity during the signing of truce with Naga insurgents.

The BJP led government in the centre is proposing to introduce the contentious CAB in the ongoing Parliament session. Congress party said it is opposed to CAB as it is discriminatory, against secular values of the Constitution, Preamble of India, Unconstitutional as it violates Art 14, 21.
