| @indiablooms | Jan 28, 2020, at 10:22 pm

Kolkata/IBNS: West Bengal based doctor, Sushovan Banerjee, who has been selected this year to receive the Padma Shri award, has said he is grateful to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the Centre to bestow him with this honour despite his affiliations with the Congress party.

Banerjee practices in Bengal's Bolpur and is known to his patients as "Ek taka daktar" which means "One Rupee Doctor."

He has been treating his patients for 57 years on a charge of Re. 1 as a fee.

He has dedicated his award to all his patients.

Banerjee is among the four Padma Shri awardees from West Bengal this year.

The doctor claimed that he is a Congress supporter and therefore was surprised with the announcement.

He told media that he is grateful to the Centre for conferring him with this honour.

Banerjee was a Congress MLA from Birbhum district’s Bolpur seat in 1984.

He also received a congratulatory call from former President Pranab Mukherjee following the announcement.
