After no breakthrough, farmers agree for 6th round of talks with Centre on Dec 9
New Delhi/IBNS: The agitating farmers have agreed to the government's proposal for a sixth round of talks on Dec 9 after no headway could be made during the four hours of talks on Saturday as farmers refused to budge from their core issue--repeal of the three farm laws.
Media reports said the farmers threatened to walk out of the talks which they termed was meaningless.
They showed their protest by maintaining silence for a while and holding placards that said " Yes or No".
For the second day, they refused the lunch offered by the government and had their own food sitting on the floor.
Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said after the meeting that a new proposal would be made and placed before the farmers in the next round of talks on Dec 9.
He said the government was ready to talk on all the concerns troubling the farmers in connection with the new farm laws.
Tomar stated that the Minimum Selling Price (MSP) will not be removed which the farmers believe will cease to exist if the new laws are implemented.
"We don't intend to affect mandi (wholesale markets) in the states, they are not affected by the law either," he added, reported NDTV.
A high-level meet between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior cabinet ministers, including Home Minister Amit Shah preceded Saturday's talk.
Last Thursday, farmers' had put forward a 39-point presentation explaining the inadequacies of the farm laws, refusing threadbare changes and demanding written assurances on continuing the MSP scheme.
