Puducherry/UNI: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will contest all the five municipalities and 10 commune panchayats in the three-phase Local Body Election to be held in the Union Territory from October 21, party incharge for Puducherry Somnath Bharti said here on Thursday.

Mr Bharthi, who had a discussion with the party functionaries here later told news persons that the AAP along with democratic forces would fight the Local Body election.

Elected Local Bodies is a must to ensure a corruption-free and transparent grass root level democracy. So far, local body elections were held only twice in the UT, he said, adding that AAP wanted the elections to be held, he added.

"Because of inefficient” administration here for the past 20 years, Puducherry is reeling under debt and lacking basic infrastructure facilities.

"Quality education, medical facilities could be provided in Puducherry as in Delhi, the AAP leader said and added that it is planning to contest the next assembly election too.

"To have direct contact with the people, the party is contesting the local body election," he said.

AAP National Convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will undertake an election campaign in Puducherry for the local body election.

Mr Bharthi alleged that the BJP is keen in getting positions and the Rajya Sabha seat without any concern about the people of the Union Territory.
