11 Tibeteans arrested ahead of Xi's arrival
Chennai, Oct 11 (UNI): A couple of hours before the arrival of Chinese President Xi Jinping for the informal summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, 11 Tibeteans--five of those who attempted to stage a protest demonstration in front of the hotel where Xi would be staying--were detained by the police on Friday.
Police sources said six others, who came from Bengaluru by road to the Chennai airport in a bid to stage a black flag protest, were arrested.
Police said five Tibeteans, including two women carrying tibetan flags, breached the high security corridor near the ITC Grand Chola, where Xi Jinping would be staying, started shouting slogans against him and attempted to stage a protest demonstration.
However, policemen swung into action and removed them from the spot and took them to the Guindy police station for questioning.
While one of them carrying a Tibetean flag was whisked away in an autorickshaw by police personnel, four others were arrested and taken in a police vehicle.
In a related development, six Tibeteans, who came from Bengaluru to stage a black flag protest against the Chinese President, were arrested in front of the airport.
Acting on information that some tibeteans would be coming from Bengaluru to stage a black flag protest, police mounted strict surveillance at the airport.
Six Tibeteans--four men and two women--who came in a bus from Bengaluru and reached airport for staging a black flag protest, were arrested by the airport police.
They were taken to the airport police station for further inquiry. airport sources said. It may be recalled that police have detained close to 20 Tibeteans over the past few days to thwart attempts of any protest against the visiting Chinese President.
On Oct 6, with this, eight Tibetean youth, including activist writer, Tenzin Tsundue, were arrested as they planned to unveil Free Tibet flag and stage a protest demonstration against Mr Xi.
Two days later, police arrested a professor from Taipei, on the charge of planning to stage a black flag demonstration during the visit of the Chinese President.
The arrested person was Tenzin Norbu (34), an English Department faculty at at a deemed university in Kelambakkam on the city outskirts.
He was arrested on charges of providing accommodation to the arrested Tibetans by the Palavakkam police and all the arrested were remanded in judicial custody.
Following the alert from the Central Intelligence Agencies, Tamilnadu DGP J K Tripathy directed all Superintendents of Police and Commissioners of Police to monitor the activities of Tibetans in their respective jurisdictions.
