Kolkata, Jan 6 (IBNS) President Pranab Mukherjee on Wednesday inaugurated three new buildings of Vidyanagar College, near Amtala, South 24 Parganas, nearly 30 kms. away from Kolkata constructed with the help of Universities Grants Commission (UGC) grant of Rs 10 crore 23 lakhs.

They are administrative, auditorium and gymnasium buildings.

Speaking on the occasion, Mukherjee recalled his association with this college from 1963 to 1968 as the professor of Political Science before venturing into politics.

He appreciated the initiatives of UGC for prompt sanctioning of this huge amount of money for the construction of these three buildings and thanked Ved Prakash, UGC Chairman for his untiring efforts to make it done within short span of time, who has to manage more than 36 thousand colleges and 740 universities of this country.

Prakash too was present on the occasion.

The President even recalled the unflinching zeal and social commitment of social activist Kartik Chandra Adhikari, who happened to be the President of the Vidyanagar College Governing Body and also Dhirendranath Bera and Harendranath Majumdar whose hard endeavours help the college come into being on July 29, 1963.

The President laid the foundations of these three new buildings in January 2013.
