Washington-based Canadian embassy to hold party on Trump’s inauguration, expect poutine and more

Toronto, Jan.17 (IBNS): Canada’s embassy in Washington, D.C., has decided to celebrate US President-elect Donald Trump’s Friday inauguration with an exclusive party, said embassy spokeswoman Christine Constantin in an email, media reports said.

Guest will be served with delectable Canadian cuisine — “including but not limited to poutine, British Columbia salmon, Canadian beef, and tourtière,” reported Thestar.com quoting embassy spokeswoman Christine Constantin's email.

This would be in contrast to  the 2013 party for Barack Obama’s second inauguration when Tim Hortons coffee, Molson beer and Crown Royal whisky were served, reported Thestar.com.

With the Canadian Embassy on Pennsylvania Ave. being the only embassy located between the Capitol and the White House, the Arthur Erickson building offers a good vies of the parade route, which heightens the attraction of the embassy party, media reported.

The party has been held since Bill Clinton’s inauguration in 1993.

This time, Canadian diplomats expect 1,800 guests.

Newt Gingrich, a prominent Trump ally and the former speaker of the House of Representatives, has shown up continuously for three inaugurations.

Usually most guests hang out in the embassy courtyard and indoor Canada Room and theatre, from where they can watch Trump’s swearing-in and inaugural address on television screens.

The most prominent figures are likely to enjou a brunch with Ambassador David MacNaughton on the 6th floor, which offers majestic views of the Capitol.

This official social event in Washington, like most of others previously held, serves a political purpose, according to media reports.

Canada’s socialising with U.S. power may be especially critical at a time when the incoming president is vowing to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement, impose new import taxes, and change the U.S. relationship with its military allies, the media reported.

“Hosting an event at our embassy gives Canada an excellent opportunity to welcome important guests, further build on our relationships and continue to advance Canada’s interests in the United States,” Constantin said.

Constantin said the cost of the event would be covered by some Canadian companies.
