California, May 21 (IBNS): A gun wielding man was shot and critically wounded by Secret Service agent near a security checkpoint close to the White House on Friday, media reports said.

According to reports, the man carrying the gun approached the  checkpoint on E Street .

The Secret Service agent shot and took him to custody after he did not follow the  verbal commands to stop and drop the gun, reports said.

"No one within or associated with the White House was injured, and everyone in the White House is safe and accounted for," a White House official was quoted as saying by CNN.

The official said: "The President has been made aware of the situation."

The WhiteHouse was put under lockdown. It was later lifted at  4 p.m. ET.
