US government shut down for the second time this year

Washington, Feb 9 (IBNS): The US government has shut down after the Congress failed to decide on a key budget on time.

In January, earlier this year, the US faced a three-day shutdown after the senate failed to pass a bill.

On Thursday, lawmakers had hoped to pass the new bill before it expired, but Republican Senator Rand Paul demanded a debate, ending all hopes.

Paul later tweeted, "Yes, we should have debate. Yes, we should have a vote. Let's have a vote tonight on amendments."

"I'm asking for one amendment. It takes fifteen minutes," the senator said.

" Yes, I want a strong national defense. I believe it's actually the most important thing the federal government does. But you have to ask yourself whether a $20 trillion debt makes us a stronger country or a weaker country," he added.

Meanwhile, following the shutdown, services in the US are expected to take a hit on Friday.
