An 18-year-old was arrested after he shot dead a school director and injured two others before taking hostages at the education institute in Hat Yai district of Thailand on Thursday.

The 18-year-old assailant was shot and wounded to bring an end to the hostage drama that followed his initial assault on Phatong Prathan Keeriwat School, according to the Central Investigation Bureau, reported Bangkok Post.

The school director was rushed a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The attacker reportedly took a female teacher hostage.

Meanwhile, Bangkok Post reported, quoting local media, that prior to the school attack, police had responded to a call about an 18-year-old male who was behaving violently and attempting to harm his mother at a house near the school.

When the police were trying to defuse the situation, the attacker seized a M4 rifle from an officer and rushed to the nearby school.

The suspect entered the school in “an agitated state while carrying a gun”, the Songkhla provincial government said in a statement as quoted by Bangkok Post.

According to reports, the attacker was seeking a teacher who had previously disciplined his younger sister. She was a student of the school.
