Miami, Jan 7 (IBNS) Several people died when a gunman went on a shooting spree in the Fort Lauderdale airport in Forida, USA on Friday, said reports.

According to initial reports, five people died in the shooting while many were injured. The suspect is in custody, said media reports.

"Confirming multiple people are dead, and a number of people were transported to a hospital from @FLLFlyer. Upper level of airport open," tweeted The Broward Sheriff's Office.

"Eight people were injured and transported to an area hospital," tweeted the Broward Sheriff.

Former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer who is in the airport tweeted: "All seems calm now but the police aren't letting anyone out of the airport - at least not the area where I am."

"The police said there is one shooter and five victims," he tweeted.

He first tweeted: "I'm at the Ft. Lauderdale Airport. Shots have been fired.  Everyone is running."
