Pope Francis to visit Bangladesh this year

Dhaka, Aug 28 (IBNS): Pope Francis of the Roman Catholic Church will visit Bangladesh later this year, officials said.

The spiritual leader will visit the country in November, officials said.

The pope is scheduled to arrive on a three-day visit on November 30 to December 2 this year, George Kocheri, Vatican ambassador to Bangladesh, was quoted as saying by The Daily Star.

He said the Pope will convey his message of peace and harmony for the people of the country.

In a statement, Bangladesh Foreign Ministry said the leader will visit Bangladesh at the invitation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

He is likely to meet President Md. Abdul Hamid and Hasina.

"At the invitation of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, His Holiness Pope Francis will make an Apostolic Visit to Bangladesh from 30 November to 2 December  2017. During the visit His Holiness is expected to meet the Hon’ble President Md. Abdul Hamid, Hon’ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and give audience to the Christian Community in Bangladesh. An advanced team recently visited Bangladesh to coordinate the preparation of the visit with the Protocol Wing of the Ministry," read an official statement issued by the Ministry.

Pope Francis had appointed Patrick D'Rozario, the Archbishop of Bangladesh as the first ever cardinal from Bangladesh on Nov 19, 2016.
