Brussels, Apr 23 (IBNS): In a significant development, a Belgium court on Monday jailed 2015 Paris attacks suspect  Salah Abdeslam for 20 years  over a gunfight that led to his arrest.

"Abdeslam, 28, and co-defendant Sofien Ayari were both convicted of terror-related charges of attempted murder," reported BBC.

Ayari was also handed 20 years jail term by the court.

They had fired on officers who had raided a flat in Brussels in 2016.

They were reportedly not present in the court when the verdict was read out on Monday.

The judge, Marie France Keutgen was quoted as saying by BBC: "Their intention is clear from the nature of the weapons they used, the number of bullets they fired and the nature of the police officers' wounds. Only the officers' professional response prevented it being worse."

The November 2015 Paris attacks were a series of coordinated terrorist attacks that occurred on Friday, Nov 13, 2015 in Paris, France and the city's northern suburb, Saint-Denis.

At least 130 people were killed in the attacks.
