Ottawa, July 2 (IBNS): Congratulating newly elected Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said he is looking forward to work closely with the former.

Left wing candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador, popularly known as Amlo, is Mexico's President-elect, after surging ahead of his opponents in the recently concluded presidential polls.

According to officials, Amlo has won about 55 percent of the votes.

Issuing a statement following Amlo's win, Trudeau said: "Canada and Mexico are close friends and longtime partners. We share common goals, strong people to people ties, and a mutually beneficial trading relationship that is the envy of the world – reflected in our joint effort to update the North American Free Trade Agreement for the 21st century.

"Canada is proud of its close links with Mexico, and we will continue to collaborate on issues that matter to citizens from one end of North America to the other.

“I look forward to working closely with President-elect López Obrador, his administration and the Mexican Congress to build on the vibrant partnership between our two countries, create economic growth that works for everyone, and advance human rights and equality. Together, we can deepen our strong relationship, and shape a better future for Mexicans and Canadians alike.”

While 88 million people were eligible to exercise their voting rights, the turnout was around 53 million.

Apart from choosing the new President, the people also voted for 128 senators and 500 deputies in Congress.

The fate of state and local officials were also decided during the vote.

The ruling PRI, which enjoyed popularity in Mexican politics for over four decades, has fallen out of favour of late.
