Jakarta, Aug 6 (IBNS): At least 82 people were killed as a powerful quake measuring 6.9 on the Richter Scale hit Indonesian Island of Lombok,  media reports said on Monday.

Hundreds of people have been wounded by Sunday's quake, officials told BBC, and the death toll is expected to rise.

As per reports, the quake was felt off the north coast of the island.

According to reports, the quake struck 10kms underground.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has placed the northern part of East and West Lombok on a tsunami alert, warning that the first wave to hit the region may not be the highest, as per The Jakarta Post report.

Model and presenter Chrissy Teigen, who was holidaying in Bali, tweeted: "Another aftershock just now. probably the 8th one we have felt since the big one last night. we are safe, up high and nothing around us. thinking about everyone around us and in Lombok especially."

Singapore's Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam, who was also in Lombok during the quake, posted on Instagram: "Caught in an earthquake in Lombok. Our delegation is in Mataram, Lombok for a security conference.I was in my room, 10th floor, working on my laptop. Suddenly the room shook violently, walls cracked, it was quite impossible to stand up. Heard screams. Came out, and made my way down a staircase, while building was still shaking. Power went out for a while. Lots of cracks, fallen doors. The BBC describes it as a huge earthquake. Delegation thankfully safe though there I was told that there were casualties amongst other guests. Singaporeans in Lombok should get in touch with our Embassy in Jakarta at +62-(811)-863-348.Hoping that there are no serious injuries and that everyone will be ok. The third photo is of damage in a different location, in Lombok."

Australian Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration Peter Dutton, who was also at the conference, on Monday said no Australian has been killed in the quake so far.

"Thank you to Ambassador Gary Quinlan & his incredible DFAT team & Embassy staff for their work in Lombok. They went above and beyond. Many still have not been to bed. No reports of Aust casualties at this stage. Best advice at the moment is 80+ dead and sadly likely to go higher," he tweeted.

Gili Islands was also hit by the quake.

"Airports on both Lombok and Bali are both operating normally despite some minor damage - at Bali's Denpasar airport some ceiling panels were shaken loose by the tremors," BBC reported.
