Police in San Antonio city of the US shot dead an Indian-origin man after he struck two officers with his vehicle when they were attempting to apprehend him in connection with an assault case.

He was identified as 42-year-old Sachin Sahoo.

Police told KENS 5 that Sahoo hit a woman with his car and tried to back into officers with the same car hours later.

His family told the news channel about his declining mental health.

Sahoo's ex-wife Leah Goldstein said he was a family person.

“He was a great dad, I was a stay at home mom for many years," she told KENS5. "He provided for us.”

Goldstein says Sahoo was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

“He suffered the past ten years with bipolar disorder," Goldstein said. "He also had symptoms of schizophrenia.”

“He couldn’t understand what was wrong with him," she said. "He would hear voices. And hallucinate and just hear voices and just get stuck in his own mind.”

What happened on Sunday?

The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office says Sachin Kumar Sahoo suffered from multiple gunshot wounds while police tried to apprehend him.

Police said the incident connected to Sahoo was first reported on Saturday at a home off Cheviot Heights near Tezel Road on the Northwest Side.

When officers arrived, they found a 51-year-old woman who witnesses said was intentionally hit by a BMW SUV while she was walking on the sidewalk. The driver then took off, News4San Antonio reported.

The woman was taken to hospital in critical condition.

Neighbours told the police that Sahoo returned home at around 12.30 am.

Once officers arrived, they said Sahoo turned violent and rammed both officers with his vehicle. One officer pulled his weapon and fired, hitting Sahoo, who was pronounced dead on the scene, News4San Antonio reported.
