Historic opportunity to modernise NAFTA to bring job in N. America: Canada Foreign Affairs Minister Freeland

Mexico City/Ottawa, Mar 6 (IBNS): Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister, Chrystia Freeland, who is now in Mexico City for NAFTA negotiations, has said it is a historic opportunity to improve and modernize the trade deal to bring jobs in North America.

In a tweet, Freeland said: "I'm in #MexicoCity today for #NAFTA negotiations with @USTradeRep and @ildefonsogv. We are focused on making North America more competitive in the world and creating more jobs."

"We have a historic opportunity: modernize and improve #NAFTA to bring more jobs to North America. Canada is committed to success. I am pleased we closed three chapters and two annexes" she said in a follow-up tweet.

Freeland's comment came a day after US President Donald Trump had said that Canada will be exempted from the imposition of the trade tariffs (on steel and aluminium imports) only if a new NAFTA is signed.

North Atlantic Free Trade Agreement or NAFTA is an agreement which came into force from January 1994 by Canada, Mexico and United States creating a trilateral trade bloc in North America.

Trump has alleged that the US faced severe losses in trade pacts with Canada and Mexico, the two partners of NAFTA deal.

For more than two years, US President Trump criticised the agreement and also hinted to take some serious steps being in the administration or at least send some ultimatums.

Trump reportedly wants the treaty to be more fair.

Both Canada and the US differ on the subject of climate change.
