Days after the Magdeburg car-crushing episode left the country shocked, at least two people were injured after a suspected Syrian man attacked them with a knife in a supermarket in Germany's Berlin city on Wednesday when the country was celebrating New Year Eve.

The incident occurred just days after a Saudi man rammed a car into a crowd at a Christmas market in the German city of Magdeburg which left five people dead.

Sharing details about the latest knife attack incident, German Police said in a statement: "This afternoon, an attempted murder took place in a supermarket in Charlottenburg."

Police said an initial investigation showed the arrested person had a mental illness.

"Shortly before 12 noon, the Syrian suspect, who lives in Sweden, attacked two men in a supermarket on Sömmeringstrasse and on the sidewalk in front of a hotel nearby," police said.

"The suspect is said to have stabbed the two men with a knife he had stolen from the supermarket, injuring both of them," police said.

Police said one of the injured persons was released following outpatient treatment.

"The second is currently receiving medical treatment in a hospital," police said.

The investigation into the incident is currently ongoing.

In the Magdeburg attack incident, 200 people were injured.

He was arrested on murder charges.
