A Hindu businessman died in Bangladesh’s Naogaon district after jumping into a canal while trying to escape a mob that was allegedly chasing him on suspicion of theft, media reports said on Wednesday.

The victim was identified as Mithun Sarkar, a resident of Bhandarpur village, News18 reported.

Police recovered his body from the canal on Tuesday.

There has been no official confirmation that Sarkar was involved in any theft.

The incident comes amid a reported spike in attacks on members of the Hindu community in recent months.

In separate incidents, two Hindu men were killed in Bangladesh within a span of 24 hours.

One of the victims, Sarat Mani Chakraborty, a Hindu grocery shop owner at Charsindur Bazar in the Narsingdi district, was attacked by unidentified assailants while running his shop.

Chakraborty sustained critical injuries and was rushed to a hospital by locals but died on the way or shortly after admission, News18 reported.

Hindu journalist killed

In another incident, a 45-year-old Hindu factory owner and acting editor of a local newspaper, identified as Rana Pratap, was shot dead by unidentified assailants, according to media reports.

Pratap was allegedly attacked by a group of men who shot him in the head. He died at the scene. Reports said multiple cases had previously been filed against him, and he was alleged to have links to an extremist organisation.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the killing, though no arrests have been made so far.

Pratap’s murder has added to growing concerns over the safety and security of the Hindu community in Bangladesh, amid an increase in attacks targeting minorities.
