European court slams Russia's 'Gay Propaganda' law

Brussels, Jun 20 (IBNS): The European Court of Human Rights on Tuesday chided Russia over its 'Gay Propaganda' law, reports said.

Stating that it breaches human rights and promotes homophobia, the court slammed Putin's administration.

"The very purpose of the laws and the way they were formulated and applied in the applicants' case had been discriminatory and, overall, served no legitimate public interest," the court said in a statement.

The statement further read, "Indeed, by adopting such laws, the authorities had reinforced stigma and prejudice and encouraged homophobia, which was incompatible with the values of a democratic society."

The court further said that Russia discriminated against the three gay rights activists who brought the case.

The Gay Propaganda is a 2013 passed law that prevents people from promoting homosexuality among people under the age of 18.
