Donald Trump thanks Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen

Washington, Dec 3 (IBNS): US President-elect Donald Trump on Saturday thanked Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen for congratulating him on his win over Hillary Clinton last month.

"The President of Taiwan CALLED ME today to wish me congratulations on winning the Presidency. Thank you!," a Trump tweet read.

"Interesting how the U.S. sells Taiwan billions of dollars of military equipment but I should not accept a congratulatory call," a subsequent tweet read.

Meanwhile, Trump's direct interaction with Tsai Ing-Wen has irked China.

After a severed diplomatic ties with the island nation in 1979, Trump is the first President or a President-elect to speak to a Taiwanese leader directly.
