China grills Canada over illegal marijuana imports

Ottawa/Beijing, Apr 30 (IBNS): China has grilled Canada over the illegal flow of marijuana to their country, media reports said.

Canada has said that the Chinese government strongly opposes trafficking of illegal drugs.

Canada also said China supports an international cooperation to combat the criminal activities.

An internal federal memo has stated several media that Canada has been grilled by China.

However a spokesperson of Chinese Embassy in Ottawa did not offer any comment on the matter.

Andrew Gowing, a spokesperson of Public Safety Canada, failed to provide statistics to prove the move of Canadian pot to China.

He has been quoted by CTV News, "The clandestine nature of illegal cannabis exportation from Canada to any country, including China, makes it difficult to estimate exactly how often it occurs."

"We live in an increasingly global and interconnected world where crime has no borders. Canadian law enforcement works closely with a number of international partners, including Chinese law enforcement, to disrupt international drug trafficking networks and combat international drug trafficking" Gowing added.

Meanwhile, marijuana is expected to be legalised by the Canadian government from July, 2018.

Apart from legalising, the federal government has also decided to make an age of majority to use recreational marijuana and also to decide on the retail network of stores where the marijuana could be sold.

However, youth in possession of cannabis will not be criminalised from henceforth.

But any car driver or passenger will not be allowed to consume cannabis.
