Canada's Ontario Liberals promise to strengthen industrial standards, cheaper transit to cut carbon emissions

Toronto/IBNS: With a target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent below 2005 levels by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, the Ontario Liberals Tuesday promised a string of measures to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

These include strengthening industry standards, banning new natural gas plants, providing rebates on electric vehicles, and offering grants for eco-friendly renovations.

Leader Steven Del Duca said that the Liberal plan shows more than half of those reductions coming from federal initiatives, and added it is important for the province to act as well.

Steven was also not in favor of reintroducing a cap on trade because of the federal carbon tax backstop that is now in place.

The introduction of a new $250 million-a-year fund to help communities become climate resilient was promised by the Liberals to divert and recycle 60 percent of waste from landfills by 2030 and 85 percent by 2050.

The Liberals also promised to update the building code requiring new buildings and renovations to be held to energy efficiency and climate resiliency standards by 2025.

Planting 800,000 trees over eight years was also promised by the Liberals, offering rebates of up to $8,000 for electric vehicles up to retail prices of $65,000 and $1,500 for charging equipment, and requiring all new passenger vehicles sold in Ontario to be zero-emission by 2035.
