Toronto, Jan 6 (IBNS): 20 alive and 18 dead poisonous snakes, including a variety of vipers, puff adders, hundred pacers, cobras and rattle snakes, were seized from a Toronto home on Tuesday by Toronto Municipal Licensing and Standards (TMLS), media reports said.

According to the news release by from Bruce Hawkins, Strategic Communications a search warrant was executed under the direction of TMLS, assisted by the Toronto Police Service, the Toronto Zoo and Toronto Public Health.

The News release continued that the person in possession of the snakes had been charged with 20 counts of keeping prohibited animals which conflicted the Toronto Municipal Code, Chapter 349, Animals.

His first appearance is scheduled for Jan 27 at 2700 Eglinton Ave. W.

Each of these offences carried a maximum fine of $5,000.

The animals are at present under the custody of Toronto Animal Services.

Their final disposition will be decided by the judicial process.

The city says federal or provincial laws or regulations do not prohibit the importation of these snakes into Canada, but venomous snakes, and others that are larger than three metres are prohibited in Toronto, CityNews reports said.

Any person with knowledge of locations where prohibited animals are kept were asked by the City to report it by calling 311, the News Release said.

Public consultation on prohibited animals in Toronto would be held during the next few months.

More information about this will be made available in the coming weeks, added News release
