Canada FM Anita Anand to visit Oman, Qatar amid Strait of Hormuz disruptions
Brussels: Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand will travel to Oman and Qatar from May 12 to 15 to discuss trade, security and regional developments, including efforts to maintain commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Anand is scheduled to meet Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Hamood Albusaidi and other senior officials in Muscat to discuss bilateral relations, economic cooperation and potential defence partnerships linked to Oman’s Vision 2040 development plan, according to a statement from Global Affairs Canada.
In Doha, Anand will hold talks with Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani aimed at expanding cooperation in trade, investment and security.
The discussions are also expected to focus on regional tensions and coordination efforts to ensure safe passage for commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy transit route that has faced disruptions amid instability in the Middle East.
Canada said the trip reflects its support for Oman and Qatar as regional partners during a period of heightened economic uncertainty and continuing concerns over maritime security in the Gulf.
Canada established diplomatic relations with both countries in 1974. Merchandise trade between Canada and Oman totalled C$222 million ($161.8 million) in 2025, while trade with Qatar reached C$355.1 million, according to the government statement.
