BLA issues 7-day ultimatum to Islamabad as it claims custody of 7 Pakistani soldiers

The separatist militant group Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) has claimed that it is holding seven members of Pakistan’s security forces and has issued a seven-day ultimatum to Islamabad to negotiate a prisoner exchange.

The group has warned that failure to engage within the stipulated period could result in the execution of the detainees.

The ultimatum was announced through a statement released by Hakkal, the organisation’s media wing, along with a video message asserting that six days remain before the deadline expires.

No official confirmation from Islamabad

The claims made by the group could not be independently verified by India Blooms.

As of now, there has been no immediate response from the Pakistani military or government authorities regarding the alleged detention of its personnel.

Pakistan has not publicly acknowledged the capture of any soldiers, maintaining silence as the deadline set by the group continues to count down.

Operation Herof 2.0

According to the BLA, the seven soldiers were captured during what it described as the second phase of “Operation Herof.”

The group claimed that its fighters had detained a total of 17 members of Pakistan’s security forces across multiple operational fronts during the course of the operation.

The organisation stated that ten of those initially detained were later released after being identified as ethnic Baloch with links to local police units.

It said the decision to release them was guided by what it termed ground realities, local identity considerations, and the perceived interests of the Baloch population.

The remaining seven detainees, the group claimed, are members of regular units of the Pakistan Army and remain in BLA custody.

The organisation said these individuals were subjected to proceedings conducted by what it described as a Baloch National Court.

According to the statement, the detainees were accused of involvement in actions against civilians, facilitating enforced disappearances, and participating in what the group labelled as “genocide” against the Baloch people.

The BLA asserted that during these proceedings, the accused were given opportunities to respond to the charges, evidence was presented, and confessional statements were recorded.

Seven-day ultimatum

Despite claiming convictions and announcing death sentences, the BLA said it had decided to grant Pakistan a seven-day grace period.

During this window, the group said it was willing to exchange the seven detainees if the Pakistani state formally expressed readiness to swap them for Baloch prisoners held by authorities.

In its statement, the group accused Islamabad of repeatedly ignoring previous offers of prisoner exchanges and alleged that the Pakistani state had shown indifference toward the lives of its own personnel.

Pakistan’s position and terror designation

Pakistan has consistently rejected the BLA’s description of the state’s presence in Balochistan as an occupation and officially designates the group as a terrorist organisation.

The BLA is banned in Pakistan and has also been listed as a terrorist entity by several countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom.

As the ultimatum deadline approaches, the situation adds another layer of uncertainty to the long-running insurgency in Balochistan, with no clarity yet on whether Islamabad will respond to the group’s demands.
