Bangladesh: Fire at chemical warehouse kills 69

Dhaka, Feb 21 (IBNS): At least 69 people died as a fire broke out at a chemical warehouse in Chawkbazar area of Old Dhaka  on Thursday, media reports said.

Hundreds others were injured in the blaze.

According to local media reports, 41 people have been admitted to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital till 5:40 am.

Authorities are fearing that the number of deaths in the incident might increase.

The fire broke out around 10:40pm at a chemical warehouse on the ground floor of the five-storey building named Hazi Wahed Mansion. The flames then quickly spread through three other buildings nearby, including a community centre, Ali Ahmed, director general of Fire Service and Civil Defence was quoted as saying by The Daily Star.

Thirty-seven units of firefighters from 13 fire stations reached the spot.

The fire was brought under control at around 3 am.

The origin of the fire is still not known.
