Accountability Bureau in Pakistan seeks to auction properties of Nawaz Sharif

Authorities in Pakistan are planning to auction the properties of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif who is currently in London and has been declared proclaimed offender in Pakistan, as per a report in the Express Tribune.

The National Accountability Bureau, Pakistan’s top graft buster,  has started the process of auctioning all the properties of Sharif and his dependents and has requested an accountability court to issue directions to the concerned authorities in this regard.

The Bureau, which has become controversial in Pakistan for its political misuse, has been targeting Nawaz Sharif since he and the country’s powerful military establishment had a falling-out.

Last year, while hearing the case, an accountability court declared Nawaz a proclaimed offender after the PML-N supreme leader failed to appear before the court despite repeated summonses.

The court had then also initiated the process to confiscate his properties and directed the NAB to arrest the three-time former prime minister with the help of Interpol.

The NAB’s application stated the former prime minister has willfully and knowingly not surrendered to the court.

The application, as reported by the Express Tribune,  reads, “Therefore, the attached properties against which no objection/claims have been preferred before the court are required to be sold out as per the prescribed procedure.”
