'If we go by the success rate...': Taapsee Pannu on 'south films falling heavy on Bollywood' debate
Kolkata/IBNS: Indian actor Taapsee Pannu, who had worked in Telugu and Tamil films before joining Bollywood, has reacted to the ongoing debate over an apparent stiff competition between the Hindi and south Indian films, especially post Covid-19 pandemic.
When asked by a reporter in Kolkata on the success of south Indian films, Taapsee said, "We all know a few weeks ago, the Telugu film industry had issued a notice saying it will stop shooting demanding restructuring within budgets citing the losses producers have suffered."
The actor, whose Hindi film Dobaaraa released Aug 19, continued, "Now coming to south Indian films, we cannot club four film industries from four-five states as south Indian film industries. There are Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam film industries in south India.
"If we go by the success rate, RRR and Pushpa (Pushpa: The Rise) were Telugu films, KGF (K.G.F: Chapter 2) was a Kannada film. Now tell me how many Hindi films have succeeded?"
She added, "If we have to compare, don't club the entire south. All south (southern films) do not come under one umbrella because they have individual entities. Now by that logic, northern films will include Bengali (Bengali industry belongs to eastern India), Hindi, Punjab, and other films!"
In late July, members of the producers guild in the Telugu film industry had announced they would stop shooting from Aug 1 owing to increased costs.
"Post-Pandemic with the changing revenue situations and increasing costs, it is becoming important for producers to discuss all the issues we are facing as a community of filmmakers," a statement, which was issued, reads.
After the third wave of Covid-19 pandemic, a series of Hindi films including Aamir Khan's Laal Singh Chaddha, Akshay Kumar's Samrat Prithviraj and Raksha Bandhan have failed to garner meaty earnings in the box office.
Among the successful Hindi films are Alia Bhatt's Gangubai Kathiawadi, Kartik Aaryan's Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, Varun Dhawan and Kiara Advani starrer Jugjugg Jeeyo.
