Kolkata, Jan 10 (IBNS): An on duty police official on Tuesday participated in a mob assault in West Bengal's Hooghly district, local media reports said.

According to reports, locals detained two suspected thieves at Narayanpara area under Polba Police Station limits in Hooghly in the morning and had started beating them.

After being informed, police rushed to the spot and instead of rescuing the suspects from the angry mob, officer-in-charge (OC) of Polba PS, Samir Sarkar, reportedly joined the mob assault.

After hour-long torture, the duo was taken to police station, local medias said.

According to police sources, as these two men confessed their involvement in thefts, they were arrested later.
