WB polls: Over 84 pct voters turnout recorded in sixth phase

Kolkata, May 5 (IBNS): A staggered six phase seven rounds Assembly Elections in West Bengal concluded with the final phase of balloting on Thursday in which more than 84 percent turnout was recorded, said officials.
According to the Election Commission, an overall 83.90 percent of the total 5.8 million electorate exercised their franchise in the ultimate phase of voting in the eastern state.
 
The final phase of the elongated West Bengal Assembly polls was held in nine constituencies of Cooch Behar district and 16 in East Midnapore.
 
While East Midnapur recorded 85.09 percent turnout, 82.71 percent of the voters cast votes in Cooch Behar.
 
Even as the last phase witnessed huge voter turnout, incidents of disturbances were reported from Cooch Behar.
 
Trinamool Congress candidate Rabindranath Ghosh, who was on fray from Natabari contituency, reportedly slapped his own party worker.
 
According to a local TV channel report, he even threatened a jawan and polling officer. Ghosh was also reported to have gone near EVM machines while the polling process was undergoing.
 
The Election Commission has lodged FIRs against two party MLAs for violating secrecy of votes during the last phase of Assembly polls.
 
There were altogether 170 candidates in the fray.
 
Some of the major candidates in the fray in this phase included Environment Minister Sudharshan Ghosh Dastidar, who contested from Mahisadal, Suvendu Adhikari, the sitting  AITC MP from Tamluk, from Nandigram and former All India Forward Bloc (AIFB) MLA Udayan Guha from Dinhata.
 
The fight is between the TMC and Cong-Left alliance.
 
Counting of votes will take place on May 19.
