Venezuela: Maduro-led Socialist Party mauls opposition, wins elections

| @indiablooms | Oct 16, 2017, at 06:13 pm
Caracas, Oct 16 (IBNS): Nicolas Maduro-led Socialist Party landed a crushing blow to the oppositions, winning 17 of 23 state governorships in Venezuela, reports said.

However, the result has enraged the opposition camp, who cried foul.

Earlier, projections have showed opposition would win between 11 and 18 governorships, the BBC reported.

Rubbishing the results, the Democratic Union Roundtable coalition has demanded a complete audit.

Meanwhile, Venezuelan President Maduro has hailed the results as a victory for chavismo.

He reportedly said, ""Chavismo' is alive, in the street, and triumphant."

The country is presently undergoing an economic crisis.

It has also reported a food shortage amid ongoing clashes between pro and anti incumbency faithfuls.

The US had earlier this year placed a sanction on Venezuela, which prompted the country's President to question: "Who do these imperialists in the United States think they are?"
