UP polls: Congress set to form alliance with Samajwadi Party

Lucknow, Jan 22 (IBNS): With the state of Uttar Pradesh going for Assembly polls, the congress is all set to join the Samajwadi Party (SP) as its junior partner, media reports said on Sunday

According to NDTV report citing sources, the two sides have split the difference to agree on the Congress getting six more seats than the 99 it was offered on Saturday by Akhilesh Yadav's Samajwadi Party.

Uttar Pradesh goes to elections in February for a seven-phase polling extending up to March.

The ruling Samajwadi Party faces a daunting task to hold the forte in the face of an aggressive campaign by the BJP and the Bahujan Samaj Party being a formidable traditional rival.

The prospects of the SP plunged into uncertainty more because of the vicious infighting that broke out barely three months beforsupe the elections with the organisation standing divided between two camps-Akhilesh and his father Mulayam Singh Yadav leading the warring factions.

However, with the support of majority of legislators and party workers behind him, Akhilesh is now expected to take full command over the party and lead it in the polls.

Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi  and Akhilesh Yadav have recently expressed signs of good feelings  by offering compliments to each other.
