UN adopts India-piloted resolution to set up Memorial Wall for fallen peacekeepers

New Delhi/UNI: The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution to establish a new Memorial Wall for fallen Peacekeepers, piloted by India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday expressed delight at the development and expressed gratitude for the support from UN members.

In a tweet, he said: “Delighted that the Resolution to establish a new Memorial Wall for fallen Peacekeepers, piloted by India, has been adopted in the UN General Assembly. The Resolution received a record 190 co-sponsorships. Grateful for everyone's support.”

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in a tweet said: “India piloted the adoption of a Resolution in the UN General Assembly to establish a Memorial Wall for fallen Peacekeepers.

“The Resolution received a record 190 co-sponsorships, a testimony to faith in India's contributions and intent.

“Sincere thanks to all member states who co-sponsored the resolution!”

India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ruchira Kamboj introduced the draft resolution titled ‘Memorial wall for fallen United Nations peacekeepers’ on Wednesday in the UNGA and it was adopted by consensus.

About 177 Indian peacekeepers have died while on duty, the highest number by far from any troop-contributing country.
