Triple Talaq a matter of belief, not a question of constitutional morality : Muslim Law Board tells SC

New Delhi, May 16 (IBNS) : The All India Muslim Personal Law Board on Tuesday told the Supreme Court that the triple talaq practice is a matter of faith and there is no question of constitutional morality or equality, media reports said.

Appearing for the AIMPLB, senior  advocate Kapil Sibal questioned how could Triple Talaq be un-Islamic when it has been in practice for 1,400 years.

A five-judge constitutional bench of the top court is hearing the issue which has been raised in the form of a petition by several organisations.

“Who are we to say that this is un-Islamic?” Sibal asked  and said the system of  Tripl Talaq  started  after the time of Prophet Muhammad and it has been mentioned in Hadith.

He also drew an analogy between Triple Talaq and the  Hindu belief that the god Ram was born in Ayodhya.

“If I have faith that Lord Ram was born at Ayodhya, then it’s a matter of faith and there is no question of constitutional morality,” Sibal said.
