Trinamool MLA slammed for terming rape as inevitable

| | Aug 28, 2014, at 09:00 pm
Kolkata, Aug 28 (IBNS) A ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) legislator has invited a wave of condemnation after he said rape is inevitable and would continue so long the earth exists.

While the ruling party has earlier faced flak for not punishing its MP Tapas Paul for threatening opposition women with rape in a vitriolic public speech, as caught in a video, the utterances by TMC MLA  Deepak Haldar created a fresh controversy.

Haldar at a public rally in Diamond Harbour near here on Wednesday said: "There were rapes earlier, it happens now and it will occur till the end of the earth."

Slammed by opposition and media, Haldar, however, said his words were meant to fight the social evil only. He said it should not be taken out of context.

Opposition Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) was quick to slam Haldar and TMC.

CPI-M MP Mohammad Selim said the TMC is using rape as a weapon now in West Bengal to intimidate the Opposition.

CPI-M leader Sujan Chakraborty said the speech is reflection of the mentality of TMC.

TMC is already battling the damages from the utterances of Tapas Paul.

In a public meeting in a village in West Bengal some months ago, Tapas Paul was caught on camera threatening women of the opposition Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) with rape by his boys.

He also threatened to kill people himself with a firearm.
